The Oldest Architecture In The UK?? Sunday 19.7.10

It's our last day.

SOB

BOOHOO!!

Don't want to go.

Want to stay.

BACK TO BUSINESS!
This picture; hanging in our hotel room, looking like an image from SILENT WITNESS or WAKING THE DEAD, was disturbing us.

We decided that, apart from needing to get out more, she also needed to better hung.

Before we left, we took her down turned her around, put her back. She still looks like a corpse, but now she's a comfortable corpse. I liked this hotel, DOUNE BRAES very  much, despite the body in our room.

We were a bit slow catching on to this building the BROCHE

It must, surely, qualify as the

OLDEST ARCHITECTURE IN THE UK???

It is ASTONISHING, INSPIRING, CLEVER, and RELEVANT.

With the staircase sandwiched between the outer wall and  a concentric, inner wall, there's a clever buffer zone between the elements and the accommodation. It would have been dark in there, but modern glazing would allow for light in without major heat loss.

I'D LOVE TO BUILD A MODERN VERSION.

IT WOULD BE A TRULY EXCITING BUILDING.

Even if what you see is an isolated pile of wet, grey, stones on the top of a bleak and soggy hill, it doesn't change what I see.

Today the CELTS still push the boundaries of acceptable ornamentation. You may call it a load of balls, I call it POSITIVELY STUNNING. This is part of the boundary fence around a small home where the occupants, clearly, love to beach comb.

We went on to UIG beach.

Not because it is world class.

Not because it is windswept.

Not because it has sand dunes.

Not because it is quiet.

Not because it has good weather on a wet day.

Not because it has colourful wild flowers.

Not because of it's moody mountain backdrop.

But, for this,

MEWALLYS' LONG LOST ANCESTOR

His eyesight's fading. We were proud to help out.

We came here because this is the spot, THE BREATH TAKING, ACHINGLY, BEAUTIFUL SPOT, where THE LEWIS CHESSMEN were found.

Having left the beach we passed this, house number WELLY BOOT.

I REALLY DO LOVE IT HERE.

Then we passed this refuge from the festival, hanging about at the side of the road. We asked if s/he wanted a lift, and garnered the distinct impression that s/he didn't like us.

CUT US COLD.

SOOOOOO RUUUUDE

Our hotel for tonight, OUR LAST NIGHT on the island, is in STORNOWAY,  Heading off across the moor we were transfixed by these beguiling shacks.

I WANT THIS ONE!  : )

Or, perhaps, THIS ONE.

THIS ONE ...... WILL DO NICELY.

Too many to choose from .... THIS ONE.......

and so on, until we reached stornaway for the last time.

Gerry and I take a pre dinner stroll around the town.

where I find yet more images catch my eye. This is

THE BEJEWELLED ISLE.

Gerry and I wave bye-bye to Lewis. Tomorrow we leave for home.

Oh look,

THE SUN CAME OUT!

Runrig, Lewis Saturday 18.7.10

It's the last day of the Celtic Festival and there's entertainment to be had all day.

The Art Centre in Stornoway, AN LANNTAIR, has a photographic exhibition of Murdo MacLeods' work going on and a good restaurant. We had lunch here overlooking the sea front.

A tight schedule today, we headed out to a nearbye town and the LEWIS HIGHLAND GAMES.

It was a bit sparse on the entertainment front and freezing cold, with intermittent driving rain.

Everyone wrapped up warmly and enjoyed the 'show'.

This was the best activity,

with plenty to keep me focussed, answering the age old question .....Well now you know;

knicky-knacky-knoos!

NEVER WAS A GIRL MORE RELIEVED AND DISAPPOINTED ALL IN ONE GO.

The noises these guys made reminded me of maternity wards.

Seemed to be about as exhausting as child birth too.

All the way through this, the LEWIS PIPE BAND played and marched about.

They were VERY GOOD.

How do they see where they're going?

Despite the coldness and wind,

they played on for quite a long time, they should rename themselves as STIFF LITTLE FINGERS.

We headed back to Stornoway past this lovely beach and the airport.

And with a few hours to kill before the Festival kicked off, we head for the harbour to look at the historic boat festival. It's pretty much over,

but there are these rotting boats lying in wait.

They are so lovely, I keep on clicking.

and walking. The lads went on ahead, to the Art Centre again.

It's great to see a fully functioning fishing fleet here too. It may be small,

but it's perfectly formed.

Across the water from the harbour sits the festival site, waiting for us,

and STORNOWAY CANOE CLUB'S MEETING UP POINT.

fell in love with this brand new, clinker dinghy. PERFECTION.

We had a fish and chip supper in the chippy opposite the festival office and checked our wristbands were in place. Then we took a stroll to the Festival for the last time

and joined all the other PERFECTLY NORMAL PEOPLE there

and prepared to enjoy ourselves.

So that's PINK FLOYD, MEATLOAF, HANK MARVIN AND THE SHADOWS ticked off . Sorry, what I meant to say was

RUNRIG

They sound like a generic band, good at what they do and OK for a night out, but only OK.

Mind you a bargain at about twenty quid.
